Project Summary

May, 2007

On March 9, 2006, the Ministry of Education issued a memorandum outlining details of the provincial bullying prevention strategy. In addition to providing information on elements of the implementation plan, the memorandum also described other aspects of the provincial strategy, including a Bullying and Violence Prevention Special Circumstances Fund to help school boards address the extraordinary challenges faced by some schools. Ontario Education Services Corporation (OESC) agreed to develop and provide leadership for this project.

This is a unique opportunity for schools experiencing significant bullying and violence prevention challenges, to participate in a project with a select number of other schools from across the province. OESC will work closely with the identified schools to help them learn more about approaches that produce long-term sustainable change, build strong community alliances and support school leadership. The project will highlight successful practices that can be utilized within a school improvement planning framework. The learning from this experience will become part of a final report to the Ministry of Education.

Applications were received from 50 district school boards to support schools with significant challenges with regard to bullying and violence and 26 have been approved to receive funding. Over the next several weeks, OESC will be in direct contact with these boards regarding next steps in the planning and implementation process.

The approved projects are innovative and diverse in their approaches. Through this project, district school boards have an opportunity to learn a great deal about building capacity for sustainable changes in Ontario schools and communities and most important, these projects will make a difference for the students we serve.
